A xiqu programme specially tailored for English-medium students
Our English-language Tea House Student Matinees offer a fun, interactive introduction to the heritage art of Cantonese opera. The new programme is specially devised for secondary students with little or no background in Chinese language or culture. Staged in the Tea House Theatre, each session features a narrated performance of romance and martial arts excerpts and musical pieces – performed in Cantonese with English surtitles.
To support teaching and learning activities, the programme also includes a teacher information pack about Cantonese opera and the selected performances. Applications welcome from international and English-medium secondary schools.
The programme features:
Two Cantonese opera excerpt performances: “The Fragrant Sacrifice” from Princess Cheung Ping and Muk Kwai Ying Proposes Marriage
A demonstration of traditional Chinese musical instruments
A performance of Cantonese music
Interactive sessions
Language:English narration with performance in Cantonese (Performances with English and Chinese surtitles)
Target Participants:Suitable for students aged 12 to 17 with no previous background in Chinese language or culture.
Number of Participants:Limited capacity on a first come, first served basis.
